Common rope types and structural characteristics of clamped steel ropes

click:Release Date:2025/6/17

There is currently no unified industry standard term for "clamped steel rope", which may refer to composite ropes with steel wires or steel cores sandwiched inside, or commonly used in specific scenarios (such as "clamped steel" may mean "sandwich steel wire rope" or "steel core rope"). The following is an analysis of common rope types, structural characteristics, application scenarios, and other similar concepts for reference:

1、 Possible types and structures of steel rope clamps

According to different forms of "clamping steel", common types of ropes include:

1. Steel core wire rope (metal core rope)

Structure: Using steel wire strands as the rope core (such as independent steel wire rope core IWRC), the outer layer is wrapped with multiple layers of steel wire and twisted.

characteristic:

Extremely strong: The steel core provides additional support and has a tensile strength 10% -20% higher than the fiber core rope, making it suitable for heavy loads.

High temperature resistance: The core has no organic materials and can be used in environments above 200 ℃ (such as steel mills and casting workshops).

High rigidity: slightly less flexible than fiber core rope, requiring the use of large-diameter pulleys (bending radius ≥ 6 times the rope diameter).

Application:

Heavy machinery such as cranes, mining hoists, and port loading and unloading equipment.

Bridge cables and building tower cranes (must comply with the GB/T 20118-2017 "General Purpose Steel Wire Rope" standard).

2. Steel fiber composite rope (non-metallic base+steel wire reinforcement)

Structure: Mainly composed of polymer fibers (such as nylon and aramid), embedded with fine steel wire or wire mesh to enhance strength and cutting resistance.

characteristic:

Lightweight and high-strength balance: The weight is only 1/3-1/2 of a full steel rope, and the breaking strength can reach 70% -80% of a steel rope of the same diameter.

Corrosion resistance: The outer fiber isolates the steel wire from the external environment, making it suitable for humid, acidic and alkaline environments (such as chemical pipeline traction).

Soft and easy to operate: can be manually knotted without the need for professional tools, suitable for temporary emergency use.

Application:

Outdoor rescue (such as fire escape ropes, requiring EN 362 safety certification).

Ship ropes, agricultural machinery traction (replacing traditional hemp ropes, extending lifespan by more than 5 times).

3. Steel clip braided rope (fiber rope wrapped with steel wire)

Structure: The center is a fiber core (such as PE, polyester), and the outer layer is woven with fine steel wire to form a protective layer.

characteristic:

Wear resistant and cutting resistant: The steel wire weaving layer can resist the friction of rocks and metal edges (such as climbing protection ropes).

Insulation: The fiber core is non-conductive and suitable for the power industry (such as high-voltage line traction, which must comply with the DL/T 1262-2013 insulation rope standard).

Visual warning: The steel wire layer can be plated with colors (such as red or yellow) to enhance recognition.

Application:

Electric construction (insulated traction rope, withstand voltage ≥ 10kV).

Fixed building safety nets and protective ropes for children's play equipment.

2、 Key Performance Indicators and Selection Points

When selecting "clamp steel rope", it is important to pay attention to the following parameters:

1. Bearing capacity

Breaking strength:

Steel cored wire rope: Common specifications include 6 × 37+IWRC, with a breaking strength of approximately 130kN (about 13 tons) when the diameter is 16mm.

Clamp steel fiber rope: such as aramid+steel wire composite rope, with a breaking strength of up to 80kN when the diameter is 12mm (refer to the manufacturer's test report).

Safety factor: Heavy lifting requires a safety factor of ≥ 6 times (actual load ≤ breaking strength/6), and temporary use can be relaxed to ≥ 4 times.

2. Environmental adaptability

Corrosion resistance:

Damp environment: Priority should be given to galvanized steel core rope or outer plastic coated clamped steel rope (such as PVC coating).

Chemical scene: Stainless steel wire sandwich rope (304/316 material) or full aramid+stainless steel composite structure.

Temperature range:

Low temperature (below -30 ℃): To avoid fiber embrittlement, choose steel core rope or low-temperature resistant nylon clamped steel rope.

High temperature (>150 ℃): Steel core rope or ceramic fiber+steel wire composite rope (temperature resistance up to 500 ℃).

3. Convenience of operation

Flexibility: Measured by the minimum bending diameter, the steel fiber rope can be bent to 3 times the diameter (such as a 10mm rope bending radius ≥ 30mm), and the steel core rope needs to be ≥ 6 times.

Connection method:

Steel core rope: It needs to be fixed with professional tools such as wedge-shaped joints and compression joints.

Clamp steel fiber rope: can be directly knotted (such as Brin knot, human knot), but it is necessary to ensure that the steel wire is not exposed and scratches the operator's hand.

3、 Typical application scenarios and recommended solutions

1. Construction and Engineering Machinery

Requirements: Heavy lifting, tower crane traction, deep foundation pit support.

*Plan:

Steel core wire rope (6 × 19+IWRC): diameter 20-24mm, suitable for 50 ton cranes, with anti twist structure to avoid lifting rotation.

Application advantages: The steel core provides anti extrusion capability, suitable for high load scenarios with frequent takeoff and landing, and meets the requirements of GB 5144 "Safety Regulations for Tower Cranes".

2. Electricity and high-altitude operations

Requirement: High voltage line installation traction, live working safety rope, cable fixation.

*Plan:

Insulated clamp steel rope (aramid+stainless steel wire): outer layer coated with insulating rubber, withstand voltage of 35kV, diameter 14mm, breaking strength ≥ 100kN.

Application advantages: Lightweight design reduces workload, steel wire layer enhances cutting resistance, and prevents sharp angle wear of tree branches and iron towers.

3. Outdoor exploration and rescue

Requirements: Mountaineering protection, cave rescue, earthquake emergency towing.

*Plan:

Clamp steel braided rope (polyester core+galvanized steel wire outer layer): diameter 10mm, dynamic elongation of 15% -20%, can cushion falling impact, certified by UIAA (International Mountaineering Federation).

Application advantages: The outer layer of the steel wire is wear-resistant, suitable for rock friction environments, and the color is eye-catching for easy search and rescue positioning.

4. Ship and Ocean Engineering

Requirements: Anchor chain auxiliary rope, lifeboat towing, offshore platform fixation.

*Plan:

Stainless steel clip rope (316 steel wire+PE core): diameter 18mm, resistant to seawater corrosion, fracture strength 150kN, can be used in salt spray environment for more than 10 years.

Application advantages: Non magnetic (does not interfere with navigation devices), smooth surface reduces the attachment of marine organisms.
